 Mortar and Pestle

Mortar and pestle Thai Name: ครกหิน - krok heen

There are two main types of mortar and pestle used in Thailand: stone and ceramic. Stone mortar and pestle are usually made from granite. A granite mortar and pestle are used for grinding spices, fresh herbs or garlic. They are commonly used in Thai kitchens. Ceramic mortar and pestle is called krok din and is mainly used to make som tum (papaya salad).

Using mortar and pestle will produce a product that is more flavorful than a product prepared in a food processor. Depending on the food you are preparing the process can take up some time. If you are in a hurry, reach for the food processor.
